Sandeeno, Messenger 12″ – Easy Beat Productions
Side A: 1. Messenger – Sandeeno 2. Messenger Version – Easy Beat Riddim Section
Side B: 1. Dub is the Message – Mark Solution 2. Message ina Dubwise – Mark Solution
‘Messenger’ is the new release from Easy Beat Productions, the label masterminded by talented producer Mark Solution. This four track single is the follow-up to last year’s rather excellent ‘Deliver Us’. That single means a lot to me, not only because it is a beautiful, laid back, piece of sweet swinging reggae, but it was the single (read the review here) that helped me find the direction that I wanted Reggae Roots Review to go in. It’s funny how the chance meeting with Mark in a South London record shop proved quite pivotal. The promotion of smaller, mainly European labels was now the goal.
The title track on this new single features Sandeeno on vocals, a singer who is a stalwart of the UK reggae scene. Born in Birmingham, UK but raised in the Jamaican parish of Manchester, Sandeeno was schooled in the Jamaican singjay tradition with formative years spent sparring on sound systems with the likes of Garnet Silk, Papa San and Beenie Man as well as going on to work with big name producers including King Jammy, Bunny Lee and Donovan Germain. On this single I have never heard him sounding so serene! I guess it is the influence of Mark’s laid back trademark production sound. All four tracks carry on where ‘Deliver Us’ left off, both have a very distinctive lo-fi groove and both feature Dave Fullwood’s beautifully expressive horns. The whole package is sort of a reggae, jazz, dub, ambient melting pot.
For those of you new to Mark, he is a founder member, selector and operator of Solution Sound System. Emerging on the reggae scene at the end of the 90s Solution made a name for themselves playing side by side with some of the UK’s most respected sounds. Mark has some cracking singles in his back catalogue and ‘Messenger’ is a worthy addition.
